Well friends, it's been great having you all tag along with me here at Pictures In My Pocket but it was about time to retire this 'ol gal and move on to something that, I feel, is a little more professional looking and has easier navigation. I'm not going to change anything about what I post to my blog or change my writings, it's all just getting a makeover and new name and I hope you continue to follow and enjoy my life and what I share with all you.
It just makes me happy when i know people are interested in what I have to show and say and I really had fun when I gave away some prints a couple weeks ago! I love knowing people are interested in my work.
Rachel, a good friend, sent this image to me of her holding one of my prints and I just smiled all night after getting it, not for just the picture, but for what she said,,,,,"awesome. Got it sitting at my desk. The crazy thing makes me daydream!"

The Rock and Worship Roadshow

Brooke, thanks for inviting me to come out tonight for some great entertainment and for getting me up close with that special little tag :)
I have never been to a Christian show before tonight and wasn't quite sure what to expect and quite honestly, didn't expect the whole auditorium to be as packed as it was!!
I was only able to shoot a little of MercyMe but was really diggin' Jeremy Camp and all of these photos except the last one were shot during their performance.
I have to say, I've been to a lot of concerts but tonight is one I won't soon forget. There was this very palpable energy I had never experienced before and it was just flowing through the crowd. It was quite powerful and I somewhat felt absorbed by it all. You can check out the tour here.

It was so good to get back out and do some shooting the other day! And now that winter is making it's escape, it was an especially good day :) I love having the sun back! Spent about an hour and a half with Marissa and her dad Dennis wandering the alleys and buildings of downtown Billings. Thanks for the opportunity!

Welcome to the hood

I have a new neighbor as of last night (we share an old home/duplex) and she stopped over for some conversation and borrow of my hammer. She and her friend spent most of the night working hanging pictures, setting up furniture and having fun and I liked hearing all the noises; it's been too quiet since I moved in on my side a few months ago. It was quite the inaugural event, even Hillary stopped by.

Recieved my new baby yesterday and haven't been able to shoot it until tonight! Oh my goodness, it has the most beautiful bokeh ever!! I shot this about an hour ago and am heading back out to shoot it all night tonight, so excited! Those of you who know me know how much I love shooting in bars and well, watch me go! Hamburger, fries and beer courtesy of Tiny's Tavern, Billings, MT.
They have the absolute-hands down-best burger in town!! Love 'em!

Found this bit of art by Zack Arias via Troy's blog. Oh how true the words. Zack really brings to the surface for me what I sometimes feel during the winter months here in Montana. It's not so bad if you get to play every once in a while, but I'm usually too busy for that nonsense :) However, I am now rethinking that. I'm learning that my time is precious to me and that I must enjoy it more.

The one thing I absolutely love about traveling is meeting people, and last night was no exception.
I found these two beautiful people at a local favorite karaoke spot and knew immediately that I just had to photograph them.
I introduced myself and within a few minutes we were shooting under some awesome red neon lights. Thanks you two for allowing me some time with you!

Jana, a great friend of mine and fantastic photographer called recently asking if I could take some family photos and while I'm usually a bit leery of family photos, yeah, it's not my forte, I jumped at the chance. I've gotten to know Jana, Chris and kids pretty well over the last couple of years and it's always a good time when ever they are around. Thanks guys for hanging out for a bit!

I had the fantastic pleasure of being the judge for the Billings Camera Club last night and their most recent photo contest. Ross, a good friend and fantastic photographer asked me if I'd be the judge for the organization. And the theme,,,,doors. I'll tell you what, it was pretty awesome when I set that page of slides down on my lightbox and the glow of colors just lit up my face and filled my eyes! After the judging I gave my own presentation on some of my work and it was quite fun answering questions. Thanks again Ross and Club for having me :)

I had forgotten all about this image but as I waded through my drives recently we were reunited. It brings a peace to me.
The day I made the image it was dark, rainy and everything was sopping wet, including me. The air about me moved with such deep peace and tranquility that I became completely absorbed. I lost my thoughts and myself and I drifted away.

Oh it was a bitter day in Chico for the wedding of Jodi and Johnny but we braved it all and in the end we came out without any frostbite! :) This was my last wedding for 2008 and I'm looking forward to the new wedding season which is getting near.

so there i was, getting fuzzy on wine, sitting on the couch talking on the phone with friends when I decided to call it a night and head to bed. I fell in and buried myself under my heavy quilt loving the weight pressing down on me and with a smothering contentment, I sighed a last sound and started to fall fast asleep. But then, my mind instead of finding quiet comfort, wandered in another direction.
Recently there have been so many goings-on in the local hood concerning our four legged friends. most recently there was the sad story of Shady Lane Kennels and the deplorable conditions in which over a hundred dogs were forced to live. and this week there was the controversial bill in the Montana house proposing a ban on pit-bulls. what bothered me about that bill was not the dogs, or the question of whether or not the ban would make our state safer or not, but the idiocy and backwoods thinking of some annonymous folks who emailed the representative who started the bill. they threatened and harrassed and said some pretty horrible things. I'm sure those same people aren't the ones who showed up at the capitol to go against the bill in proper order, those people weren't afraid to show their face and were there with real voices, unlike the anonymous hiding behind the late night glow of their computer screens. it's amazing how quickly some people can start grunting and throwing things, having a tantrum,,,,makes me believe that maybe evolution is the truth and we are derived from monkeys! anyway, I digress,,,,
All I know is that my heart is heavy for all the animals in bad places. I know, as I write this tonight at nearly 2 am there are pets out there in the below freezing cold and I wish so much that I could help, but where do you start?!! It's frustrating.
I really don't believe the penalties are harsh enough for owners who mistreat and I don't understand why. I was going to say that I'm sorry for going on about this, but, I'm not. I love animals and cannot stand seeing them hurt.
well, I feel a little better getting some of that off my chest, and tomorrow I know i will wake with a new reserve and I will find a way to make a difference.
In this moment, I want to wish a hug out to my friend Roni who lives in the Carolinas who just lost her best pal Lucky this past Monday. It was extremely hard for her and as I read her letter to me tonight I had tears on my cheeks. Lucky was 11 years and as I know Roni, she had a wonderful life, but it's still hard.
I have to say, now that I'm on my own, I do miss having my little buddies, Andrew, Chloe and Kota and it's hard, but I know that I can see them anytime and that they remember me when I stroll through the door. I even think of Miss Ava often, how could you not love her,,,,,plus, she keeps the backyard free of roaming lions.

Roller Bounce Baby!

Skating with Toni and her crew at the local skate rink,,,, awesomeness! What a blast it was, and although I only made the loop a few times, I managed to not fall down! I did skitter a bit though and nearly lose my manly-stance as my feet danced away from me, but all was good in the end :) It's been nearly 25 years since I last put on some skates you know.

They have something called the Snowball Skate where all the boys line the edges of the rink and wait for a girl to pick them to skate with and while we were all standing around watching, remembering our younger days at the rink, we noticed one little cute fella just standing there patiently waiting. He just looked so shy and small amongst the other boys and so we convinced Toni that she should take him out for a skate, since he was being ignored by everyone else.

It was pure brilliance to see his face shine when she skated right up to him and snatch him out of the crowd! She just made his day. And she made my day by inviting me out, I don't think I've had a better Friday in quite the while,,,thanks Toni!

I had a little fun with these images and just went crazy on the retro-tool in photoshop :)

In the meantime, I just wanted to express how happy I was today when my friends at the Ups store handed over my daily goods.
I received my copy of the premier issue of Southern Weddings Magazine and I pretty much stopped everything I was doing to ooh and ahh through all the beautiful images and articles! Lara Casey and crew know how to do it up right!
Congratulations to my friend Jose Villa for gracing the cover with the Tennessee wedding of Chelsea and Tec ~ one of my favorite weddings of his.
Also, a congrats to my friend Jeremy Harwell for his images of Katy and Seth's wedding also getting published. So much talent you guys!
Oh, how I wish I could shoot in the south, the light there seems to be just magical!

Assignment Europe

Just sent in my final edit from the Europe assignment and wanted to share a few colorful favorite pics of mine.
The following shots, except the first one, were all taken in Girona and Barcelona Spain. If ever you get to spend some time in Barcelona, make sure you take the 4 hour Fat Tire Bike Tour through the city. There's no better way to see the sights!
I can't exactly remember the name of the little square or the historical event that happened where the last frame was taken but all the holes and pounding in the walls are from gunfire.

White Elephant Party

I was invited out last night by Rick to Kathy's house for a White Elephant Party and even though the temperatures were in the minus zero range I decided I would brave the night's grip to have some fun with friends not seen in a while.
It was low key and relaxing to just hang and talk and well,,,relax! Two special guests, actually they live there, were what I think is a Ball Python and Cajun, a Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog. Cajun was beautiful and until last night I had never even heard of this breed. He was so gentle and happy and when I first went down to his level he graced my cheek with some licks and kisses. He was such a happy dog. There were dips, snacks and vodka soaked gummy bears and worms and all around good company. And I got some fun pictures just for the memories.

The images I'll be showing are some of my favorite images and moments from my first journey there.
They say your first trip to Haiti should not be much longer than a few days,,,,I was there for about 10 days and was worn well thin. I was quite beat down physically and emotionally. They also say you either hate it or love it. Personally, I fell passionately in love with Haiti, the people, their culture and the sad beauty it is.
If you are a photographer, writer or just an interested soul, I am planning a trip back to Haiti for next November. Email me for details. The trip will coincide with Day of the Dead festivities.

Memories from the Hacienda

Sitting here tonight, bundled in a new favorite blanket, a gift of recent, I find myself feeling the splinter's point of loneliness. I've come down a little from my Mexico high and I'm feeling a bit displaced. I'm floating in that 'dream state', where it all feels a little like wonder in my eyes. Memories seem to be traveling farther and getting faint and they cross over from my daydreams, until they become the dreams of my night's deepest sleep.

I always go through this whenever I get home from somewhere distant and especially more so when I've made and left new friends. The sweet of happiness that once was, is poured over by the emotions of ache and ever wanting more. Just as Tchaikovsky's Overture trumpets and sounds in my ears as I write and ponder, my heart beats quicker and faster in the fear of being left all alone, not being able to experience this again. Even though I know that won't happen, and hasn't happened, I sometimes spend my days in that state.

As I take today for myself and slumber it away, there's a cold blowing Montana wind outside reminding me that I'm home, and I reminisce of the mexican sun streaking through the trees in the early morning and of peacocks strutting about the cobblestone walkways, wondering of us as we of them. My days in Mexico start with chili on my eggs, coffee to warm me up and good early conversations among my fellow workshop attendees. I love this. I absorb it all.

And now, as I sit here in my bed, typing under the midnight oil, I look over and see the card from Jose sitting on my dresser, it's simple and beautiful. There is a picture of a burro on the front, a holga image of his, and every morning when I awake, I see it there and am reminded of my adventure in Mexico and know that no matter what, I'm not really alone and that I will see my new friends again. I thank everyone who was a part of this experience and thank you for making my life's adventure that much more precious.

Mexico Workshop with Jose Villa

Can you say AMAZING???!!!

I've been waiting all year for Jose's Workshop which was held at Hacienda El Carmen in Jalisco, Mexico. I met some great people from all over and will forever keep their friendships close. There is so much talent out there! Jose was inspirational to say the least and so genuine :) Cameron Ingalls and Karina Puenta also led us during the workshop and what incredible artists they are! Joel Serrato, Gene Higa, Ann Hamilton were all there with us too, supporting, sharing and being so gracious with their time and I'm so glad we spent this week together, thanks for everything and all the great instruction and wisdom you have passed to us. I have been reborn! And oohhhh, that mexican light! It was so incredibly beautiful and I'll never forget it.
Special hollas to our modelos y modelas from Citro Modelos ~ Martin, Danny, Valeria and Miiriam and to Mar Romero who kept them looking hot!

I'm so sad it's over but I know I'll see you all at WPPI and I can't wait :)

Well, well, well. As I sit here in the library at the Hacienda I am relishing the memories and friends that were made over the last few days. And while they are all gone now and it's pretty quiet here, I think of this great experience and still feel them around me. Everyone touched me and I will never forget you. Today was the last day of the Jose Villa Workshop and as we get ready for dinner I find myself feeling pretty lucky to have been able to hang out with the greatest group of people from all over the last few days.
We officially ended this afternoon and before dinner tonight three of us took a quick sunset walk around the village just a stones throw away. I shot both of these images just about an hour ago as the light faded. Tomorrow I'll be spending most of the day alone as everyone else is heading back to the states. I'll be venturing out on my own, my plan is, for most of the day, looking for more friendly faces like this beautiful lady I met this evening.

Tonight I had a quick but good conversation with a longtime friend and fellow photographer. He has decided to close up shop, sell his house and head west towards his roots. He actually told me this a few weeks ago but we hadn't had the chance to talk much since then. When I first moved to Billings years ago, he was the guy who printed my images and I also learned a lot through our weekly conversations when I visited his shop. I hate to see him go but I know he'll enjoy shooting for himself again and like me, he just hasn't had much of that time lately. I am reminded of this image when I chat with him and his journey ahead. I shot it on a trip with Amy down the coast almost two years ago.

I sometimes forget how simple pleasures can bring back the soul. I'm not talking about those daily delights, such as seeing the apple logo pop up on my screen or late night Seinfeld episodes to forget the day away, but more of those quiet connecting spots in time. With a warm numbing across my body, it's a high of sorts, one that I always welcome. I feel absolute and assured in those moments and not a wicked hair could tangle my peace. I forget the world outside my mind and care for only the moment.

One of these times came to me recently as I followed Sara and Mandy as they fished the Nowood creek in Northern Wyoming. Between cliffs of red clay and thick valleys of green they fished, and I explored. As soon as my feet dipped into the cool clear tumbling waters of the Nowood and I saw the lean of tall summer grasses, I felt it, that moment. There was a sensation, a transition, a realization, a connection that this was good, way good for my soul. And even though I followed along the banks with them, I was on my own, and at times I drifted farther away, apart, out of sight, to be alone, where I found small pockets of bliss for my own private delight. I absorbed the textures all around me; fallen and splintered trees, worn river stones and spider webs that dangled in the shade. I listened to the quiet crashing of leaves in the breeze and watched as cotton floated down to earth in the slanted golden evening sun. My fingers were light and my steps were sure. It was unforgettable.

We only spent about an hour in the creek, wading and wandering, so I feel I missed a lot as we quickened our pace back to a bbq waiting for us. I could've spent days drifting the curves and straits of the creek and maybe later I'll get back there, but for now I try to bring back the spirit of the Nowood to my sleeping thoughts. I walk along, forever in heaven, where fish dance in the shallows, water bugs zip the ripples and if I look close enough, my own reflection smiles and nods back at me.

Oh what a bitter cold day it was down on the Chico farm!! Chico Hot Springs was the venue for Jody and Johnny's wedding yesterday and although it was biting cold we didn't get the crazy snowfall that everyone back home in Billings did. The wind swept around us all day making for quick in-n-outs of the car, waming up only to brave a couple quick moments again, but what troopers and oh the sacrifice! You two were awesome and we're happy to have been a part of your day. Thanks so much! Full post soon...

A letter to me

NOTE: THIS POST, WHICH HAS BEEN WRITTEN OVER TIME AND WHICH WILL CONTINUE IN PARTS, HAS BEEN ESPECIALLY HARD TO WRITE AND WHILE I THOUGHT OF NOT EVER SHARING IT, I NOW THINK IT MAY HELP ME, BY OPENLY EXPRESSING IT. IT IS ABOUT A LETTER I RECEIVED A YEAR AGO.

The letter

It starts simply,,, with two words,,, "Hey babe," and just like that, I'm a train-wreck. I sit sobbing uncontrollably and I drop the letter to the table in front of me. My balance loses me and I push myself back on the couch. I press my palms hard into my face and eyes and yet I can't stop the tears from flowing. The smell of crying is in my nose and it burns and suffocates me. I will have to wait hours before I can pick it up again and try to continue. How simple the words, yet how powerful, how wonderful.

It was just over a year ago that I received this letter. It has been with me for all that time and yet tonight I have only opened it to read. For the last week it has been sitting, slightly hidden, next to that girl with a pearl earing,,,,it seems safe there. It has been an especially thought consuming and cautious journey to this night and already I am having the difficulties I had hoped I wouldn't. In trying to find the right place and time, I have taken this letter with me everywhere. On road trips to nowhere I have stowed it, hoping that when I got there, wherever that was, I'd be able to peel it open and read it. It's been with me to bars, hotels, and even some of my weddings. I've carried it hoping I would find that right moment in the right place where the strength would present itself to open it without complications. Alone, at first I thought, would be best, then no,,,,it should be best carried out in the presence of so many people I don't know that I would have to control myself. I would, in front of so many strangers, act as if I didn't care, and I would fool the letter, and it couldn't betray me. Yeah, well that never happened either. It has become a part of me and I of it. But, now at this point in my life I must take it in my hand and read it so that I can continue on. Without regrets and questions and for those who are especially close with me, including my love, I must put this at point. It is not fair that I hold all my attention here and not where it needs to be.

I sit staring down at the beautiful handscript written across 4 pages of heavy thick paper and I try to focus and begin again. I follow with my fingers the edge of the paper and try to steady my breathing, to sort my thoughts. It takes me a while and a deep breath. When I start again I only make it a few paragraphs before setting it down. This is going to be much harder than ever I thought.

I can see her standing there, in front of me, the author of this letter. Her dark hair curling down around her face, past her dimples and the corners of her mouth, and I can feel the warmth in her dark brown eyes as she closes the door behind her to the snow flying about just outside. She's just getting home from work; she smiles as she pulls off her coat and her cheeks are pink from the cold, and I can smell her. The light scent of Sunflowers, her favorite perfume, mixed with the cold air she's brought in with her. You know the smell of your love ~ the smell of their skin. I could smell her when I read those two words.

It was over thirteen years ago that I fell deeply in love with her. Not my first love, but my first true love. A love that takes you away from yourself.
And now, I have this great task at hand, and to pursue a thought of anything else, at this very moment, seems absurd to me. I will finish this tonight, through great anxiety or not. I continue down each line and with each word, a slight whisper of her voice comes over my own. Towards the bottom narrows of the first page, where her writing seems to get smaller, I feel her breath on my ears and I frighten myself when I briefly imagine her touching my arm. Ok,, Ok,, Ok,, Ok,, I repeat. I'm too emotional for this right now, way too fuckin' emotional. I set it down and wait for another hour. I go to bed and try to gather myself.

Behind the scenes

So, as I sit here in Minneapolis waiting to catch the last leg of my flight home I'm reflecting back on this whole amazing journey I've been given. This is my third adventure for ACU and each and every time I am even more inspired by the folks who make up this community. I'll have more on the teachers and admin people soon but for now I just wanted to thank the students who put up with Scotty and I for the last week and a half. You all were awesome and I wish I could've gotten to know you all a little more had time allowed. I was able to have some great conversations with a few of you and I'm grateful for the experience and I hope you all realize what a great opportunity you've been given to study abroad (I'm sure you know!) and under the wisdom of your instructors with you there. Thanks for allowing us to invade your space and stick our cameras and lenses up in your biznazz, it was a great experience for both of us!

While we were listening to our bike tour guide, well, while most were listening to him, I was talking up this fella on what has been happening in the world; I haven't watched tv the whole time I've been away from home! I totally forgot about the VP Debate and so he was filling me in on it and although he didn't want to discuss his feelings (he was afraid of offending) he just said it was a great debate, guess I'll have to catch the re-run when I get home.
Just a good face and good conversation in a quick few minutes. I've also just realized at this very moment that this fella is the only unknown face I directly shot on the entire trip, I mean as in approached street portrait. I guess I was wrapped up in the assignment and that's not a bad thing :) I did see many faces I wanted to make images of, just never got to.

And, even though I'm praparing for my trip home, I have plenty of images from the trip coming up, so stay tuned!

Who’da thunk??!!
I spent the day today, and what a beautiful day it was, on a bike for four hours touring Barcelona! Thanks to Fat Tire, all had a fabulous time and it was quite the way to see the city!! Shane, you would be proud!
After our bike tour we headed over the the stadium for some good ‘ol spanish futbol and Barcelona kicked butt 6-1 over Madrid.
I’m just doing a quick post tonight as we just got back and it’s about 2:30 am, and yes, I’m out here freezing again blogging from the steps of the cathedral,,,,well, it’s not nearly as cold as last night. Anyway, I’ll put up some pictures tomorrow of the bike ride and give a full stat on my trip here.

Oh, and to the few of you who know who you are,,,,,i'ze got the goods and am bringin' them home for you :)

Dinner Break

Had kind of a slow day today as far as following the kids around. They had the afternoon off and so we all took siestas.
Tonight Scott, Steven, Corey and I headed downtown for dinner at a Crepe place, forgot the biz-card so I can't link it right now and we actually got the scoop on this place by taking the advice from Ryan Air, and it was awesome, probably the best food yet I've eaten while on this trip. I've decided that I'm just going to have to do a food post later when I get back as I have so many food shots :)
In the meantime, we took our time getting back wandering alleys and uncharted cobblestone streets. As I once again write from the Cathedral steps, with Scott blogging right next to me, bats twitter and squeak above us in the street lights and a cool breeze dances around us. This is pretty cool. Oh, and the bells from the Cathedral just rang! Here are some shots from our walk home tonight. Until tomorrow!

Blogging on a lunch break here from the Cathedral Steps of St. Peters. It's by far the most amazing place I have ever logged on from! I will have some pictures of the cathedral soon but for now here is one from this morning's walk with the students.
Great history lesson from our guide on the structures making up the historic areas around us. I've also learned a great deal on the Saints and the meanings behind the paintings and sculptures that adorn everything. I have to say the most interesting object I set my eyes on today was the Tapestry of Life. Extraordinary! Wish we could've taken pictures of it.

After getting up and moving I met with Kris, Scott and Ron and we all headed out for a late lunch. We found a place down by the plaza and I had a tasty salmon with blu cheese salad. Oh it was good,,, and I usually don't eat blu cheese, actually never. But this salad was quite the plate-walnuts, cranberries, apple slices and tomatoes on greens with a rasberry vinagarette and wedges of some pretty pungent blu cheese, (you may have to check Scott's blog for the exact ingredients). I shot some pictures but those will have to wait. I have some others I want to share. After lunch we rambled around shooting and just explored the historic buildings that surround us day and night. We made our way to St. Peter's Cathedral again and spent most of our time there.

today, today, today,,,,,

what can i say, it was an interesting day to say the least and we did so much but also not so much and now as I write this I have this weird odd feeling about me and I can’t figure it out. I think I may be missing the gals at On the Hoof already! Those lovely ladies started the day out in true-fashion by treating Scott and I to breakfast and let me tell you,,,was it ever-delicious and ever so good for the soul. Today they recommended the Big Egg Omelet which sounded pretty tasty so we both went for it. And yes, we covered it with brown sauce again, mmmm-yeaaahhhh.
Debbie, the owner, told us a few stories for the road and even offered to take us to Blenham, a nearby village if we were going to have time. It turns out we didn’t but that just gives me another reason to come back,,actually as I look at my notebook, it’s reason number 47.

After breakfast, Kevin, Steven, Corey, Kris, Scott and myself went down to a local market, nothing to fancy or unique enough to really garner my full attention, but interesting nonetheless. Scott was told a few times to not film but one fella who was sellin’ goods made fun by yelling out, “Sorry, no time for interviews today, too busy, sorry, no time for interviews!” Smiles all around.

Our next stop brought us to Christ Church where more of Harry Potter was filmed and where beauty and magnificence stands in grand form. It was quite astonishing. We didn’t even go inside as we were on a schedule but just from the outside you knew there was something incredible waiting inside for visitors. Scott and I spent a little extra time here filming and shooting. It was a pretty cloudy day but I knew if I could catch a break in the cover the front of the church would probably just glow against the background. And after about twenty minutes, there is was, only for an instant, so I feverishly snapped away altering my position here and there, lowering myself, watching the foreground, clicking. Whatcha’ think? I know some purists out there will say, oh, but the building is leaning, fix the perspective! I say, eh, I don’t care,,,it’s my image and I prefer it this way. I think the lean in this image lends to the enormity of the structure. Massive and powerful.

Iffley Church was our next and final stop this morning before heading back to the house.
It’s another old church yet it’s still used today for services. Worn, aging and unreadable gravestones lean forwards and backwards, some almost in their reach touching the grassy lawn surrounding them. Light colored mosses fill thin cracks and lichen tops most stones in uneven yet beautiful patterns. As I pass through the south side lawn, heavy somewhat dewy grasses pad my steps and I feel an incredible sense of peace; there’s a push on my chest and I breathe deeply. My head loses itself in a slight dizzy and my fingers go numb. I could have lied on my back right there in the afternoon light in those grasses and slept, I felt so at ease. I’ve experienced this feeling before but only a handful of times and in some of the oddest places in my travels. Can’t really explain it but I can only assume that there is something at work that just envelopes me. I’m sure it’s a combination of elements all lending together, maybe not, maybe it was my blood pressure dropping, who knows. I want to believe it’s more.

We headed back to the house where we had about 20 minutes to tidy up our things for our drive to the airport where we would catch our flight to Spain. I think I slept most of the hour and a half drive because the sun coming through the window onto my face, it felt good, couldn’t help it.
We didn’t fly out of Heathrow as we used a smaller carrier where tickets can be had for literally five bucks a person for travel to anywhere in Europe. We even discussed on the way up there that they must have some great way of generating dollars since they were so cheap. We were soon about to find out......
So, when flying out with Ryan Air, you can only have 15kg weight in checked luggage and for carry on, I believe, it was 10kg. Well, my camera bag weighed in at about 16kg.
I already knew my checked wouldn’t make weight and was ready to accept that and I thought for carry-on you’d be able to just pay extra fees and still be allowed to take it-well, we we’re wrong. We had to get our bag down to weight and we were only allowed one carry on. What the hell am I going to do with my gear???!!!!! I admit, I started to freak a little-I mean after all, I did have two cameras, about four very expensive lenses, a portable harddrive with all my images from the trip, miscellaneous cables that were needed and my macbook pro. I thought, I can’t check any of this!! Scott was in the same situation and many of us found that we were all overweight in our checked. So, with just a few minutes to get back in line to check in we picked an open spot on the floor near the scale, splayed out all our cases and were shifting gear from here to there, borrowing spots in others’ bags and trying to figure out what was expendable in case something did happen with our checked luggage. I said goodbye to my 35L f1.4 and some other odds and ends and stuffed them in my checked bag, burying them deeply amidst my rolled pants and folded shirts. I got my camera bag down to 12kg but without the notebook stuffed in I came in at just about 9.65kgs. I was going to have to make this work, I was not going to check my Mac. We all got in line and made our way through and my checked became fatter at weigh in and the extra charge for that was £129 or about $230! Ouch! The gal working the tickets never asked to weigh my carry on again but just asked if I had reduced the weight, which I had, and so there were no worries there, you can’t even begin to realize how relieved I was. When it was all said and done, I heard from someone that by the time we paid all the extra fees in our over-weighted bags we could’ve just bought tickets at a regular airline. Oh well, lessons learned.

We arrived in Girona a couple hours later and after a taxi ride we found ourselves in our hotel. Three of us are sharing what is like a little apartment, complete with kitchen separate bedrooms, living room and dining area. The only thing we realized is that internet was not available in the room and we had to go down to the lobby to hook up, hence no post tonight (last night by the time I’m actually posting this) sorry!
After a quick freshen we all met and walked down to a local cafe for a late night dinner.
We feasted on variety of entrées which included rabbit, melon, paella, sausage, rice and an awesome Catalan bean dish. We brought the day to a close with a leisurely walk through the historic district in which we are staying.
Right at midnight we found ourselves on the steps of St. Peter's Cathedral where as the bells rung I felt a loosening on my shoulder and before I knew what had happened, my camera slipped away from me and smacked to the ground. I picked it up and inspected it and found that the lens had taken the brunt of the fall. A strap had loosened and come loose but everything seems to be working fine, yes!

Today I skipped on early morning coffee and slept in a bit. Since the kids won't be getting in until late tonight we kind of have a day to do whatever, some personal time. Around noon, I think, I stretched out and rubbed my eyes awake. I awoke to spanish laughter on the street below my window and a gal cleaning house right around me as I woke,,,"Buenas Dias." I showere and got myself ready for some exploring. I just have to finish writing this first. See you later and I hope everyone back home is doing good!

I absolutlely love Egyptian culture and history so when we stepped inside the Ashmolean today, I was in give-me-my-fedora-and-whip-adventure-heaven! It wasn't a planned trip but well worth the extra time spent there. As we waited for student activities to pick up we walked to downtown Oxford City and shown the museum. First off, didn't know that all museums in London are free to the public; America take note, and that, to my hearts joyful glee, photography is allowed in most areas of the museum!! So, when I found the carvings of Egyptian masters, I was stopped in my tracks. I studied the carvings and textures and could imagine the feel of the rough sands and markings of the stone under my fingers. It is beautiful work and to see it in real life, up close and personal meant a lot to me. It took a lot to peel myself away from the many glyphs on display. So, if ever in Oxford, you must check out the museum not only for the Egyptian displays, but for all the art held inside,,,it is truly amazing.

And now, I must hit the sack, I can barely keep my head from dropping onto my keyboard.

Oxford ~ Day Two

What a day :)

Started it all with a breakfast like no other! Scott and I both just had our first “Baps”, a Bookie Bap to be precise, which is an egg, sausage, bacon and tomato breakfast sandwich topped with brown (bbq) sauce and yeah, delicious is an understatement! I topped mine off with a very strong espresso, not that I ordered it that way, but it just seems that most coffees around here are built tough. Good stuff though. The ladies who run On the Hoof, our new breakfast joint, are awesome and friendly! I'll have some pictures and more info on them soon, because~yeah, we're doing it again tomorrow :)

After breakfast we got to work shooting and filming students in their studies. A little bit later, one class, taught by Ron Morgan, took us to the famous and historical Bodleian Library. Quite impressive! They wouldn't allow photography in the upper floors where all the books are shelved but believe me, it was quite spectacular! Rows and rows of old manuscripts and books, beautifully lit. And the smell of worn covers and aged pages filled the air with a slight mustiness, a melody to the nose.

After that we moved down around the bend to New College and it was equally impressive! I don't think there is anything around here that isn't somewhat impressive, seriously! The gardens in back were inspiring and the halls around the chapel were quiet and thought provoking.

Finished the trip up by completely losing myself in the downtown area. There was so much to see it was overwhelming and for a while I just stood in one place, absorbing it all. After a while, I realized that I was by myself and had lost the entire group, so I made my way back to the house alone. It was a nice quiet walk, a reflective walk, a walk I'll not forget. I absolutely love this city. I wish we had more than tomorrow left here, but on Wednesday we board a plane for Spain. Oh the anguish! ;)

Oxford ~ Day One

Just got back to the hotel and downloaded today's images. So much great stuff already! I'm extremely tired though as we never did get a chance to catch up on some sleep until late this afternoon and only for about 3 hours before heading out again.

Just a little info on the assignment here,,,,
I and three others have traveled to Oxford University just north of London to basically do a "day in the life" type essay on the students living here in two houses sponsored by Abilene Christian University. There are roughly 36 students divided between the two houses which sit side by side. I have arrived here with Scott, my roommate and videographer, and Kris and Cory who are both involved in the academics marketing for ACU. The plan is to follow the students around while we show what it is to live life abroad here in this beautiful area of the UK, and let me tell you ~ it is amazing here! The architecture alone draws every breath out of me. Just across from our hotel is this church,,,you should see it in the daylight! And you will . . . :)

Thoughts,,,
just when you think your head will burst, someone calls out your name and late into the night you laugh, talk and chit-chat about nothing and everything. Thanks J for the great conversation we had last week that lasted into the wee hours of the night :)

Also, just wanted to apologize for not getting much bloggin' done this week, especially to my seniors :) It's been a busy week of planning and working and planning, etc.

I'm now sitting in Detroit waiting to board my plane to London and I'm sure it's going to be a great experience and I can't wait to get there and start shooting. Meeting my counterparts at Heathrow in the am and then the plan is to check in to our hotel and get some rest before going to work tomorrow night.

Had a great time last night with my peeps at the Ales to Trails Benefit, I'll see you soon on that bike ride Shane!

To everyone who helped me out, thank you. I truly appreciate everyone who wrote and the time spent doing it, either by email or in the comments section. Change is hard sometimes and although I've especially had a whole lot of gigantic, bigfoot sized changes i've been going through, tonight I feel at ease. A most quiet comfort, the first I have felt in weeks is upon me and believe it or not, the complete retreat of angst and shake was chased away by news I had suspected for some time but dreaded hearing. But for me, it has given some definitive light to that part of my life and now I can concentrate on an unknown, exciting and adventurous life yet to be experienced. And I hope everyone will follow with me on those journeys to come. I will keep blogging and even better, I will write more, as requested by some of you ;) Frankly, I find that this blog can keep me balanced on unsure days and that writing keeps my footing sure on sometimes fragile ground. A lesson learned and absorbed from the inspirational Kevin German and his magnificent adventures in the spheres of his life.

I received over twenty some emails in the last few days from complete strangers and it was very humbling to know that so many people follow. One email I recieved came from Germany and it surprised me with the most delicately written, yet absolute words. It was written to me with an understanding like no other.

So, with all that out there, I have a feeling of rejuvenation and I am reawakening. And I thank you again, my friends. Especially to my daily crew, thank you for standing with me and encouraging me.

Be ready to travel to London and Spain with me in a month and India in the spring. I also recieved word tonight on a possible Egypt assignment for early next summer. But, there is also so much to see in my own backyard,,,,faces, places and things that I have been blind to and taken for granted. I take some inspiration and new eyes from Kevin Miyazaki who so elegantly can see such the extraordinary in the ordinary.

So, here goes,,,,
Recently there have been some very big changes in my life and pretty much everything has been on my mind. One immediate, although small thought, is of my blog,,,,it feels stale to me, maybe even a little too safe. I have considered changing it up, deleting it all together and well, just continuing on. I just don't know what to do. I'm asking you, people I know and don't know, what I should do. I don't know even who follow for the most part as I have never had a site tracker. Yeah, I'm afraid I'll only find out I have a dozen or so lookers.
It is hard for me to determine how to blog. I shoot many different subjects and while I want to share a lot of it, sometimes I don't think a gritty photojournalism experience sits well next to some beautiful wedding images. So, people of the world, tell me what I should do,,,have at it! Should I separate my experiences into different blogs, one for weddings and one for personal or should I just meld it all into one and just maybe give a little more each day? Because I know you all are really wondering how I butter my toast in the mornings.

If you've got something more to say, leave it in the comment section for me, it may make a difference between life and death for this blog ;)

The Burg

The burg. As we call it. Not sure what to say about it. It's a place that holds some memories for me but as far as connections, well, I have family there, not much, but it's where my family tree sprouts from. I have always thought of the burg as a sort of pit, and maybe some will get mad at that description, but to me, it seems a very hopeless place at times.
A lot of people, including some of my own family, who don't move away from here end up with the typical problems of boredom, alcohol and drugs. My own father had some of these problems before he passed away over ten years ago. The main street is tidy and clean but there is not much of it. There are many empty buildings. At night it's deathly quiet, as I found out the other night as I walked the downtown around eleven. There are about 4 main bars and when one would close up, the crowd flowed into the next until it closed and so on until everyone ended up in the same bar at the end of the night. There are good people I met but there was also a sense of regret for ending up or not getting out of the burg. I asked people all night if they had lived in the burg all their lives or moved there. I would have to say it was a mix.
I don't know. I guess I should try to get to know the town more, but when I think of staying or visiting for extended periods, I feel uneasy. I guess it's something I should work on. I'll be posting more pictures soon, some that I shot during the daylight hours.

Today I’m officially on vacation. And I am beat.
Last night I boarded a hot, sweaty and cramped plane for my flight to Denver. I was supposed to have flown out last week but was given the wrong date and so here i am today. It was a long night, starting with that lovely flight. The flight actually left Billings early but as we neared Denver there were storms passing through the area that kept us in the air in a holding pattern. A very bumpy holding pattern. I guess I shouldn’t be whining, other flights were detoured to Colorado Springs and then had to turn around later for Denver. We were one of the first flights allowed back in after the storm had moved away.

After getting my bags I made my way to Avis where I picked up my upgraded car. It was only 7 bucks more a day and got better gas milage, so maybe I’ll save in the end. After hooking up my new Garmin 270 Nuvi I was on my way. Man I love that gadget!
I set my destination as Motel 6 in Pueblo. It took me straight there with no problems. The only thing,,,,Motel 6 was booked solid. After about an hour of traveling around suburbs of Pueblo searching for another place to lay my head, I found every hotel booked solid! Grumble, grumble, bad words, grumble!! It was about 1am and my eyes were fading when I saw it, behind a small moving company, a little glowing sign that read USA Motel. I maneuvered my way there through a couple parking lots and saw above the entrance ,,,,Vacancy. Yes! It was a small motel and the room was just like my plane, hot and humid, but I spied an ac in the window and I cranked that sucker up and although it vibrated and shook all night, I was cool.

I wanted to sleep in today but awoke at around 630 am and couldn’t get back. I thumbed through my new PDN.
Around 9 am the owners of the motel, and I believe one of these doors in my room attaches to their living area, started cooking and while I usually love the smell of breakfast on the road, I caught the smell of something that made me roll to the side of my bed and want to hurl. It's not that it smelled really bad, but it's the fact that I have been a bit sick over the last week and most smells of late have made me feel ill. And I haven't eaten much in that time either. The people who own the motel are asian and even though I grew up with the aromas of asian food, my best friends are asian, this morning was too much. I layed there for a while with the sheet wrapped around my face, staring off the bed at the bible on the night stand.
I've always wondered why there is a bible in every hotel-motel. Still don't know.

Well, things have gotten better. I found, thanks to my Garmin, an organic grocery and the Wireworks Coffeehouse, where I'm sitting right now. I actually found a Starbucks here in Pueblo, but couldn't get the wi-fi to work, even though I had to buy a card, activate it and so on. Wireworks is free, and this place is very artsy-cool. I even tried something I usually don't ever touch, a mint coffee. This one, topped with whip cream is the Grasshopper Mocha. Very good indeed. Why, when I'm not liking too many flavors and smells at the moment, try something I usually detest? Hell if I know, but it's good.
So, now that it is nearly noon, I suppose I should mosy on south to Walsenburg, that is my temporary final destination. My grandmothers 84th birthday party is today and the whole Ruiz clan will be there. I think something like 40 or so of us, maybe more. I just talked to my sister and she has reserved a room for me, so no headaches tonight. Now Walsenburg is very small, so I don't know that I'll be able to blog while there, but I may head to Santa Fe on Monday, I'll check in then.

What a great way to end my early wedding season! It's been a great journey getting to hang with you two and the wedding day was just as awesome. There were so many great moments that day, I'll never forget it. You two crack me up! I hope you both had a fantastic honeymoon and I'll be talking to you soon and I can't wait for our next shoot, it's going to be flippin' fun!

A short time ago I got to spend a quick, yet awesome time with Dale and So, two blues artists who are soon heading east for some appearances at some blues festivals, man-o-man, what I would give to follow along! BUT, just today I heard from So and found out that they have added a couple new fellas to their sound and so I get to spend some more time with them on another shoot! Whoo-hoo!! Can't friggin' wait!

Robin and Levi ~ Wedding

Robin and Levi were married two weeks ago and it was one awesome day to say the least.
The day, and ladies you'll want to pay attention here, started at Genesis Salon here in Billings. Mariah was in charge of hair and makeup and she's just plain cool. She's funny, stylish and knows how to get that hair done right. The salon has huge open north facing windows that bring in that beautiful morning light and the decor is gorgeous and makes for some good background :) As far as salons go, this is now my favorite. I'll hopefully be working there and with Mariah again.
The wedding venue was Dan Walt Gardens on the southern side of Billings and once again, I was amazed. The gardens are killer. There are so many opportunities for great images, you just never seem to have enough time. The owners, Dan and Walt, are more than gracious and help with whatever you may need. I can't wait for my next wedding event there.

So, the day was great and we got some great images and I couldn't be happier that Robin and Levi had me as their photographer. Thanks you guys!

I really don't know how to explain what I've been feeling lately, really don't know how to interpret it, except that there is the strongest sense of wanderlust gripping and shaking my bones. My thoughts and dreams of late have found me drifting the cornfields and forests of my youth and I have woken to the aromas of bacon and eggs sizzling on the griddle next to spanish music crackling and striking out from an old radio my uncle listened to. All so real,, for some very precious few seconds. Why now I wonder,,,why so palpable???
I think maybe the changes around me have set my mind in this state. Friends are moving, friends are miles away that I miss and another, I found out recently, was lost ~~ well, it all just sucks.
I have realized though that I'm taking too much for granted and I must refocus. Friends to me are precious, more than I have realized lately, and I can't afford to take them for granted, no one should. I haven't kept up on letters, I put calls on the back burner and I don't think I listen enough. Those little quirks, dorky smiles, and motions in life,,,they are what we need of each other, whether we know and admit it or not.

And that brings me to Cari, a wonderful artist, who is heading out tomorrow, leaving on a jet plane, movin' to the east coast on an adventure of her own. I wish her the best and hope she sees every detail in her path, wherever it may lead her. I'll miss her, we all will. I feel like I'm breaking apart here. I'm such a sap. Anyway, I'm glad I didn't pass up the opportunity to have drinks with her the other night along with some close friends. We had a great time hangin', drinking, laughin' and just being. I'll not forget it :) Hopefully we will all get to reunite at Burning Man later this summer!!

Got home last night to find out that it was party time for these two. Kind of a party for the masses since they've both had their respective bachelor and bachelorette parties already. It was a small group of us and fun times were had. Wasn't too concerned about lighting and f/stops, just wanted to lay loose. I'll be shooting their wedding in two weeks and I just know it's going to be a blast!!

Los Colores de Honduras

Just got to look over the initial pdfs of the article I shot assigment for in Honduras,,,,looks pretty good!
I'm excited to see it in final print and have a copy in my little 'ol hands.
I sincerely have to thank Ron, my editor on this assignment, for having the faith in me even without having met me, to send me to this beautiful country. I will be a changed person forever because of this journey and experience.
So, in all my happiness tonight, I wanted to share some of the colorful side of what I saw. These are random shots made between visits to locations shot for the story.

I have to say, the first shot of this post, the sunset, was made only after being in the country about 2 hours. Right after I shot it, I looked at the back of my camera, yes, I chimp, and knew that this was going to be an awesome trip.

And for all of you who have emailed me asking to see the "Crabs For Sale" picture in colour, well, there it is! (I still prefer it in b/w though)

A glimpse of a project I'm working on, a series of portraits with the working title: "Old Men I Know"
They will be all black and white, shot mostly outside. I don't think this image of Bruce will make the final cut, as it was more of a test, but I wanted to show something :) I'm pretty excited and I'll post some pictures as it progresses. I'm thinking it could take up to a year to finish, but who knows.
I'll be using both digital and medium format.

A "just because" post. I was going through some old pictures, from a couple years ago now, when I came across these. Man, nice surprise :)
This was only a few hours into a 10 day road trip which took us down the west coast to California, across the southwest, then up and back home through the midwest. Here, we had stopped in Missoula to visit with good friends over some tasty coffee. Dave and I use to work together, fish together and photograph together until he moved a few years back and since we don't get to hang much anymore, it was good to see him and his family again.
It was a fantastic way to start off the trip.
Dave is an awesome photographer and you'll be glad you checked out his stuff here.

I love photographing the political arena, even though this was more of a last-stop rally for Hillary to rev up her Montana constituents before our primaries next week. Ya' know, we may make a difference up here in Montana this time, as far as decisions on a final nominee. I missed Obama last week so I jumped at the chance to go tonight. Funny story though,,,I almost didn't get any pictures. Hillary was running an hour late and I had been standing in one spot for nearly 2 1/2 hours waiting when I gave up and decided to go home. As I was leaving, an agent (secret service maybe?), told me to hold on as she was sure to arrive within minutes. After chatting with him for a few, he convinced me to stay. I'm glad I did, although, I hadn't eaten all day and by this time I was starting to feel a bit delirious and was getting a severe head/neck ache. But it was all good :) I also challenged myself tonight by shooting only one body and one lens. I wanted to see if I could layer and find depth with just that set up. I think I did ok. Shot with my 5d and trusty 85 f1.2

I'm not saying I'm good, I'm just sayin', it feels pretty damn good to feel creative :) A light rain falling at my window, coffee at my reach and some "Skinny Love" by Bon Iver playing to my ears doesn't hurt either!

Hollywood Cemetery

Finally had some of my medium format goodness developed and scanned.
This is overlooking the James River towards east Richmond from the famed Hollywood Cemetery. This has to be one of the most beautiful resting places on earth. The cemetery itself is gorgeous, well maintained and holds quite a bit of history. When we were there it was drizzling down a bit and the light was perfect. We were nearly the only ones there. If ever you find yourself in Richmond, stop by and spend a few hours walking the paths.
